We value healthy, well-conformed, well-socialized kids and adults. Making sure that they are is one of our priorities. Our kids are raised by their dams and herd mates, yet are held and engaged by us each day. Our herd is small enough to allow this.
The kids learn their places in the herd and how to interact with people and other goats of all ages. We do vaccinate dams 4 to 5 weeks prior to kidding (CD/T and rabies), and we vaccinate kids 10-12 weeks after birth (CD/T and rabies). We do regular fecal counts but have not needed to deworm. Our herd is closed with the exception of breeding services: our bucks are allowed to hand breed outside healthy does in an area set aside for this purpose. We initially tested our herd for CAE -- all tests were negative -- and now test dams for CAE every other year after they freshen. Our herd has and has had no health or disease issues. We are part of the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program (#MA-77). Our herd is not shown but is linearly appraised most years. All kids, including wethers, have been ear tattoo'd. Doelings and intact bucklings are registered as American Oberhasli. |
